A Breakdown of Youth’s Technological Advancement Compared to Adults

INTRODUCTION

Indeed, having advanced to the third decade of the 21st century, the ongoing development of technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) remain the trends of the century. Today’s young people are considered as the digital natives as they were born immersed in the technology and therefore possess a skill that most often is ahead of the rest of the society in particular the older generation. In this article, the author examines the causes for such generational gap in terms of technology and AI dexterity, how it will impact society, the opportunities and risks in the future that it brings.

1. THE SOCIAL ECOLOGY CONCEPT

Early Exposure to Technology:

Gregory and Benninger introduce the early exposure to technology as a type of treatment for children with ADHD.

There is no doubt that today’s youth is the master of technologies and they owe this attribute to the ability to use digital devices from childhood. Children today have access to the Smartphone, tablet or computer at an astonishingly tender age. Common sense media has it that currently nearly half the children in America own a smartphone before they are 11 years old. The apparent learning of technology skills acts as an engaging mannerism to imitate and launches them to a level of technology literacy that many adults fail to get to.

Learning Through Play:

Play is an exciting form of learning, and technology is used in the teaching-learning process. These applications are therefore aimed at teaching children as well as enabling coding, problem solving and critical thinking. This style of learning can be compared to playing games where young people would be interested in exploring more about the new technologies without apprehensive of penalties which can be placing adult learners in a compromising position.

Social Media Communication:

Today’s popular social networks are represented by such applications that are widespread among young people as Tik-Tok, Instagram, or Snapchat. Apart from their functions as the means of communication, these platforms are unique places for creativity. Of these three, quite a few adults may be either too young or unfamiliar with these platforms to figure out how to traverse them successfully. They are wholesale knowledgeable with algorithms, trends, and tool etiquettes by virtue of being students of the new age interconnectivity.

2. THE ROLE OF EDUCATION

Assimilation of Information Technology in Learning:

Quite a number of learning institutions have embarked on efforts to extend the core competencies to include competence in the use of technology and are incorporating it in the syllabuses. Learning computer programming, building robots, and participating in Artificial Intelligence sessions are as usual in schools today and give students practical experience of how technologies function. This lifecycle thinking prepares Youth for jobs in a technological world that they else they otherwise would not be prepared for.

Peer Learning:

There’s an academic fraternity with kids, learning from each other in particular, knowledge is passed around. Not only this, they get the necessary tips and other important resources from peers of online communities and forums which makes them understand better about technology and AI. This learning model is different from more conventional settings where information transfer is from instructor to learner.

3. IMPLICATIONS FOR SOCIETY

Workforce Readiness:

With modern technology in its early stages of advancement the need for staff with technical skills in areas including Artificial Intelligence, data management and cybersecurity is on the rise. Those young people who have acquired better mastery in handling technology will easily secure employment once they join the market. Industry stakeholders expect employees who in addition to being technologically literate, to be adaptable and creative, a feature that is easily associated with the youth.

Building the Gap between the Young and the Old:

As much as the youth is progressing in technology competency several grown-ups may feel they are out of touch. Such division demarcating the baby boomers and generation Y may cause misunderstanding and tension between the two groups in the interactional settings — whether in an interpersonal or employment capacity. In the existing society, everyone should be important in continuing education and look for ways of enhancing their IT knowledge. This is especially so when particular youth have specialized IT skills, therefore, organizations should set up a mentorship program where young people are grouped with adults.

4. CHALLENGES AHEAD

Digital Literacy and Safety:

However, youth are not exempted from the features associated with the use of technology irrespective of their skills. There are still concerns that currently the digital environment is filled with evidences of cyber bullying, privacy infringement, and fake news among others. Parents and teachers must play their role and ensure citizens’ protection by developing information management tools and teaching youth appropriate use of internet.

The Dark Side of the Use of Technology:

It means that to provide youth with the necessary experience for critical analysis and problem-solving, one should turn to the teaching of critical thinking based on technology. It means that they may be at a loss when it comes to thinking independently, trying to use AI tools and automating everything instead. Promoting positive Attitudes towards technology while balancing cognitive technology proficiency Plus cognitive skills is essential in development.

CONCLUSION

The younger generation is growing more attuned with the information technology and AI; in most cases they are even more fluent than many adults. There is however the advantage or disadvantage by the generations produced depending on the neurological and genetic systems involved. Through promoting the integration of the young people in the society and facilitating the growth of innovations, there is a great ability to create employment opportunities for the youth as a result of technology innovation while at the same time making an effort in ensuring that all the other people in the society embrace new technological world and follow proper use of it. Thus, orientation to this perspective will become critical for personality development, for the economy, and for social integration in the future.
